Since 9th grade, I have been conducting research on environmental protection in the Long Island Sound, with a focus on plastic waste and water pollution.

Blind Brook Dam Water Research

My latest research, which began in September 2023, focuses on the Blind Brook dam water quality project, collaborating with local nonprofit Save the Sound. The goal of the research is to monitor and quantitatively analyze the dam's impact on water quality and aquatic life. I installed Onset HOBO water conductivity and water level sensors both upstream and downstream of the dam, periodically collecting and cleaning the data to remove errors. After six months of data collection, I used Python to visualize and statistically compare the data, uncovering key findings, such as the dam’s influence on tidal patterns and the effects of road salt runoff during winter months on the water system and the Long Island Sound. I presented my research at the 2024 Westchester Science and Engineering Fair (WESEF) and was honored with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) 2024 Taking the Pulse of the Planet Award.

Here I was retrieving the water conductivity and water level sensors from the downstream of the Blind Brook dam. I rinsed the sensor housings afterwards to make sure they are clear of dirts and leaves.

I presented my research on Blind Brook dam at the Rye High School Science Symposium in 2024.

Ocean Plastic Pollution Survey

I conducted a survey of global plastic pollution in the ocean and the advantage of replacing traditional petroleum-based plastic with Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) for ocean life proection. I presented the results in Somers Science Fair 2023 and was awarded the 3rd place in Chemistry.
